Your group is assigned the task of creating a broadside. For our class, a broadside is defined as a mass-produced large sheet of paper that provides information to the public on a variety of topics. Broadsides should reflect your knowledge and understanding of media during the 1700s in the 13 British American Colonies. Recognize the importance of print media during the colonial era and the contributions Benjamin Franklin made to society through his work as a printer, publisher and writer.
Each broadside must include:
-The French & Indian War
-events involving Native Americans; trade, conflict, relationships with colonists
-report on the work of Benjamin Franklin or some other remarkable colonists
-story about the frontier
3. A letter to the editor that addresses a social or political issue of the time.
4. A drawing or cartoon depicting an event or something culturally significant.
5. An additional component of your choice. Be creative. Possibilities include but are not limited to: an aphorism of Ben Franklin, meeting or event announcements, poems or lyrics to songs/ballads, political commentary, advertisements, advice on living well and information about science or weather.
Students will be assessed on the following criteria:
-thoughtfully and accurately completing all individual and group assignments
-working cooperatively and efficiently within the group
-participating in group discussions
-cooperating with others while using classroom resources
-productivity and ability to stay on task
Broadsides will be graded on:
-content; quality and accuracy of information
-design; layout and organization
-originality and creativity
-conventions
-use of graphics
Each broadside must include:
- A masthead; the name of your broadside at the head of the front of the page and must also have the date of publication and the place of origin.
- At least one news article of a historical event in the colonial era before 1765.
